Becoming the You That You Always Wanted to Be

Most people have at least something about themselves that they wish they could change. It can be something small or something major, encompassing everything from eliminating personality quirks and building self-confidence to losing weight or developing a new outlook on life. Even small changes can seem like major commitments if you aren't prepared to make a change, however. If you really want to bring about a change in your life and become the person that you really want to be then taking that first step may very well be the hardest part of the process.
To make a change in your life the first thing that you must do is figure out exactly what sort of a change needs to be made. This can involve major introspection to determine exactly what the cause of the problem is and may require you to admit flaws that you aren't entirely comfortable with addressing. Only by recognizing the true core of the problem can you begin to work on a solution to it. Once you've identified exactly what needs to change in your life, decide exactly what you want the end result of the change to be. This will be the goal that you're working toward and is what every intermediate step you develop will be based on. Whether it's quitting smoking, reaching a certain weight with your weight loss plan or advancing your career, selecting a definite goal is a major step toward achieving the change you want in your life.
By this point you will have created a realistic starting point and set a specific goal that you want to reach. The next thing that you have to do is set intermediate goals that you can use to monitor your progress. Remember to use concrete milestones as your goals so that you'll know that you've achieved them regardless of interference. Don't say that your intermediate goal is to lose five pounds; set a specific weight you want to reach. Don't say that you want to smoke less; set a specific number of cigarettes you want to cut back to. Set as many milestones as you need to let you work toward your final goal at a steady pace, making sure that none of the milestones require a large leap in comparison to other milestones so that you don't get discouraged.
Now that you've got your goals mapped out, the last bit of planning that you have to do is to figure out exactly how you're going to work toward your minor and major goals. Again, be specific; decide on specific diet changes and exercise programs if you're trying to lose weight, or ways to separate smoking from the activities you usually associate with a smoke break. If you're trying to advance your career, create plans for increasing your productivity or searching for a better job. Be specific, be reasonable and be ready to take action.
When you start working toward your goals, keep yourself motivated. Review your progress regularly to remind yourself of what your final goal is and to see how far you've come. Find a way to celebrate each milestone that doesn't interfere with your overall goal; you don't want to indulge and set yourself back, after all. It may seem difficult at first to stay motivated, but as you reach each milestone you'll realize that your final goal is that much closer and that it seems much more achievable than when you first started. Each step along the way is one step closer to becoming the you that you really want to be.
